Why can't my friend join my minecraft server?

Ok so like i started a server i took a code put it in terminal put the server launcher in and now i have the server set up i can join my friend says it says connection timed out so anyone reason why it doesnt work and dont give me **** bout using a mac because i play minecraft at school i use my mac for school work
