What are the laws of reselling art?

I know that it's illegal to sell copies of art that isn't yours, but what's the rule if you want to sell just the one copy that you bought? For example, if you buy a print from an artist is it ok to sell that print to someone else when you no longer want it? Does the artist have to be dead (I know it's ok to sell old paintings from the greats)?
